The Gary Edgecombe CA Peewee Rep
Coyotes are heading into OMHA playoffs with a 1-1-1 record in 2013.
They hosted Midland on January 2 and tied 2-2. The following day,
the team travelled to Penetang and won 4-2. On January 6, the
Coyotes ended their regular season with a tough 3-1 loss to Oro.
Elmvale finished the season seventh out of the nine teams in the league.
The Peewee boys face the Wasaga Stars first round. Wasaga finished the season second behind Collingwood, with only nine less goals. Besides their ability to score, Wasaga spends a lot of time in the penalty box. They amassed a league leading 250 penalties, 56 minutes more than the next closest team. To beat this team the Coyotes will need to do two things: shut down the Wasaga sharp-shooters, and increase their own tally marks by capitalizing on power-plays.
In previous encounters, Wasaga racked up 20 goals while Elmvale potted only 9. If the two or three Wasaga shooters can be frustrated by back-checkers and stopped at the blue line, their success around the net should be cut. Similarly, if the Coyotes can be patient and disciplined, power-play opportunities should result in more goals.
The team's fortunes seem to be improving since mid-season. Players have settled into their roles, and have bought into the vision of a team effort. Passes are more frequent and checks are being completed. They know their weaknesses and are working to improve.
Wasaga comes to Elmvale for game two on Friday, January 18. Come on out and cheer the boys on in post season play.
