The Gary Edgecombe CA PeeWee Rep
Coyotes finished their season in style, earning silver in the Maple
Syrup home tournament over the Easter weekend.
In game one on Friday, March 29, Elmvale Coyotes faced the salty Goderich Sailors. The Coyotes came out slow, but the penalty ridden Sailors allowed the hometown boys many opportunities to take control. The Coyotes won the game 2-1.
Game two saw the Coyotes take on the Seaforth Stars. Captain Matt Clarke recorded a hat trick, and Goaltenders Brody Read and William McDowell shared the netminding duties in a 5-2 win.
Game three on Saturday, March 30, pitted the Coyotes against the Acton Tanners. A close first period was followed by a Coyote feeding frenzy leading to a 10-1 victory. The only puck to beat goalie Brody Read was from an errant pass made by one of his teammates.
Having placed first in their division, the Coyotes faced their familiar rival, the Penetang Flames in the semi-finals. A cautious first period and solid defence was followed by two periods of Coyote controlled play, leading to a 6-1 victory.
In the finals on Sunday, March 31, the Coyotes faced the Parry Sound Shamrocks. The Shamrocks posted three shutouts in the round robin, and narrowly got past a spirited Seaforth team in their semi-final. Both teams had outstanding goaltending, but fast forwards and turnovers were to decide this game. The Shamrocks broke out and scored on a breakaway and again on a two on one. In the dying seconds, the Coyotes made it a one goal game, but time ran out and the Shamrocks won 3-2.
On behalf of the coaches, the players, and the parents of the PeeWee Rep Coyotes, I would like to thank you, the community readers, for your continued interest and support throughout the season. It is a thrill to the players when an adult approaches them at the grocery store or elsewhere, to congratulate them on their accomplishments, or to cheer them on in their next game. The Elmvale community is unique in its unwavering support for youth and their interests. Hockey coverage will return in just six months. Enjoy the off season.
