The Gary Edgecombe CA Peewee Rep
Coyotes are in tough, ranked fifth out of six teams in the Georgian
Bay 'A' playoffs. With only two games to play, they are tied for
second with the odds on favourites, the Collingwood Blackhawks.
Their two remaining games against the Penetang Flames and the
Collingwood Blackhawks will determine if they live to play another
series or not.
On Wednesday, February 12, the Coyotes travelled to Thornbury to take on the Georgian Shores Lightning. Both previous meetings ended in losses so the team knew they would need to reach deep. 26 seconds into the first period, Georgian Shores stuffed a rebound into the Coyote net. Six minutes later, they did it again. In the second period, Jake Bouzis scored twice on well developed passing plays to tie the game. Bad luck struck early in the third for the Coyotes, with a goal scored into their own net and a bouncing long-shot goal. Goalie William McDowell took over for a rattled Adam McIntaggart and the team dug deep once again. On two consecutive power plays, the Coyotes stuffed dirty goals past the Lightning goaltender to tie the game. The team hung on to earn one point against the team currently in first place.
On Friday, February 21, the Coyotes welcomed the Midland Centennials to Elmvale's Friday Night Hockey. Down one injured winger, the Coyotes juggled their lines and ended the first in a scoreless tie. With the second period winding down in this defensive game, Henry King potted one for the home team. Less than one minute later, Midland responded on a breakaway, lifting the rebound over William McDowell after a spectacular save. Poorly aimed slapshots were the flavour of the game, but the defensemen shut down any good chances in the third, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Two games against two higher-ranked teams, two ties, and two more points for the Coyotes. When ranked fifth out of six, a point is a point. The goal is to scratch out another point or two and secure a berth in either the finals or the consolation round. The team would like to thank the family, friends, and neighbours who have supported them throughout the season. Attending games and simply asking about the season means a lot to these young athletes.
The Peewee Rep Coyotes' final home game will take place Friday, February 28, at 8:20. It seems right to finish the home stand against their OMHA nemesis, the Penetang Flames. Come on out and support the boys.
