The
Elmvale Coyotes U11 B Rep team, sponsored by JMC Stoneworks, competed in the
Bob Merkley Memorial Silver Stick Tournament Friday December 6th – 8th
in Midland, Ontario.
The team kicked off the tournament against regular season competitors Oro Thunder. Both teams battled hard, keeping the score 0-0 into the 2nd period. The Coyotes found their groove, scoring three goals in the second period, goal two coming from right-winger Sawyer Trace. Defenseman Easton Culbert held strong in front of our net while goalie Emmett Coughlin made incredible saves, solidifying a 4-1 win.
In game two, playing against the Barrie Colts, shot chances by wingers Owen Durnford and Felix Noble showed Barrie that the Coyotes wanted the win. Defenseman Barrett Dermott was strong on the penalty kill, not allowing Barrie to enter the zone. A beauty blue line goal by defenseman Logan Phillips pushed the Coyotes to a 3-0 lead with the game ending in a 3-1 victory.
The last game of round robin play against the Midland Centennials did not go as planned. Although the Coyotes out-shot Midland, they were down by two going into the 3rd period. Forward Nash Rockey got the Coyotes on the board with a breakaway goal. The Coyotes tried to take control however, the game ended with a 2-3 loss.
Finishing round robin play with a winning record and a healthy goal differential, the Coyotes claimed a spot in the Silver Stick semi-final match against another regular season competitor, the South Muskoka Bears. The game was a nail bitter with back and forth play and a tied score by the middle of the second period. An incredible pass by Cole Foster to Lincoln Lougheed put the Coyotes ahead. Muskoka Bears fought back, however incredible defensive plays by Kohen Archer held them at bay. The Coyotes opened it up in the 3rd period, with two more goals including an empty netter by power forward Kolten Klein Gebbinck to solidify a 5-2 win and a tip to the Silver Stick Finals. Shout out to Cole Foster for receiving the Player of the Game award.
The sound of Oh Canada filled the stadium as the Coyotes readied themselves for a championship match against the Lindsey Muskies. Less than halfway through the 2nd period, the score was tied 2-2 with goals from forwards Seamus Bignall and Calvin Parnell. Calls and luck were not on our side as goalie Emmett Coughlin was injured. With no back-up goalie, player Lincoln Lougheed stepped up to strap on the goal equipment so the Coyotes could finish the game. Lindsey Muskies took advantage of the Coyotes goalie situation with three additional goals. The Coyotes pushed to get back in the game with two more goals from center-man Kolten Klein Gebbinck however could not come out with the win resulting in a 4-6 loss. A member of the Silver Stick Committee said it best as the Coyotes received their silver medals and Silver Stick finalist banner, that the team showed an unbelievable amount of perseverance and determination when faced with a difficult situation such as losing your goalie. The player of the game for the Coyotes went to Lincoln Lougheed for his courage and willingness to step up for his team.
Special thanks to Head Coach Graham Archer, Assistant Coach Alicia Noble and Trainers Brett Klein Gebbinck and Dave Rockey for their support and encouragement provided to the team throughout the tournament. Shout out to Team Manager Theresa Dermott for keeping all those who couldn’t attend updated through our team app. Congratulations Elmvale Coyotes U11 B for being Bob Merkley Memorial Silver Stick Finalist!
