28th Annual Doug Robinson Tournament Recap
The McLaren Equipment Novice Rep team travelled down to Lincoln for the 28th
Annual Doug Robinson tournament.
The boys were a bit jet lagged after a long drive Friday
morning but our goalie Jonas Columbus kept us in the game. We squeaked out a 2-1 victory over St. Mary’s
with goals from Brady McLaren and Alex Wickett.
The boys spent the afternoon touring the John Deere plant in Grimsby. Special thanks to the McLaren family for making these arrangements.
The boys must have partied a little hard Friday night and as they came out flat against South Huron losing 4-0. Or maybe they just wanted to play an extra game and it was their strategy all along. They showed the other teams they are a team to be reckoned with during the skills competition wining 2 of 3 events. The fastest skater relay team took top honours with Mason Schepers, Justin Therrien, Alex Wickett, and Sean Crooker. The sharpest shooter award went to our power house defenceman Keenan “Keen Dog” Crowder.
This seemed to motivate the team and we came out with a strong 5-1 win against one of our rivals Wasaga Beach in the afternoon. A hat trick from Alex Wickett and extra goals from Brady McLaren, and Sean Crooker secured us a berth to the semi-finals against the home town team on Sunday. Lincoln came out with a quick goal right off the game opening face-off but there was no quit in our team.
Trailing 5-1 going into the 3rd period, we made our comeback and things got interesting, now trailing only by one with 2 minutes to go. However, we needed a little more time to complete the upset and we ended up with a 7-5 loss. The Novice team had a blast and are looking forward to the next tournament in Wasaga Beach December 1&2.
